Our minds are of endlessness fascination to me. No matter how old we get, we can still create new neurological connections in our brains. If you took an 85-year-old person and gave them a regimented schedule to learn a new instrument, and then months later hooked up their brain and asked them to envision playing a certain chord, you would see areas light up in their brain that never before existed.
Starting in the early 1960’s, research began to show that most people are not very realistic or accurate in what they think. In other words, what we think is true is highly debatable. We are master storytellers. We tell stories about ourselves, others and the world, and most importantly—think they are all factual and true. I’ve spoken with many clients about what I’ve found to be the principle process of how we naturally create a story or belief:
“No matter how healthy individual employees are when they start out, if they work in a dysfunctional system, they’ll burn out.” How you improve your company’s results by addressing company culture and morale, for increased satisfaction, fulfillment and effectiveness across the board.
You may have heard the sage advice, “if you don’t change the present, you past predicts your future.” Simply the contemplation of this can radically change your disposition, if not your focus-point (at minimum) for the moment. The foundation of this advice lies in understanding your place of power, which is—and only can be—in the present moment. Now is the only time you have a choice in what to do, think, and believe.
It is said that the average college-educated person thinks an average of 50,000 thoughts a day. How many of these thoughts do you think you are aware of? How many do you think you repeat? How many of your thoughts change your current disposition or future beliefs? These questions and more had me once again think about the radical importance of consciously creating our thoughts, or what I call “purposeful thinking.”
“Warriors who communicate well with each other, are the most likely to survive and emerge victorious.” This finding was one of the key discoveries in the Social Resilience Module implemented by the US Army, and is a secret weapon for team success.
Tomorrow as you all know is Valentine’s Day, and although some may think of it as a Hallmark holiday, cliché event or just unnecessary pressure, I think of it as simply a reminder of love. Events in my life, which appear sometimes as hard lessons, serve as reminders– but I remind myself that not only challenging circumstances hold this key. What about the amazing capability of noticing a sunset that reminds us of the magic of the moment? I’ve come to view Valentine’s Day the same way.
